Workington Work Hard
The rustiness of the enforced winter break is still biting the team as they fell to their second defeat in a row.
It was a night where Workington looked hungrier and more eager to win the game and record their first home win of 2018.
It had started brightly and a pass through to Damian Reeves by David Norris saw the forward race away, but with a man catching Reeves had to square the ball to Tyler Williams whose shot was blocked away for a corner.
Workington then peppered shots at their visitor’s net, but most went wide. One effort stung the hands of Wilczynski and the ball was then cleared.
The hosts took the lead from a corner on the half hour. Conor Tinnion delivered and found the free head of Matty Douglas who powered it into the net.
A bizarre moment on 52 minutes almost lead to a second goal when Alex Byrne was apparently ‘sat on’ at the half way line. The referee, Mr. Williamson, observed the incident whilst allowing play to continue.
The breakaway saw an effort blocked on the line by Jake Skelton who was injured making the clearance, thankfully the defender was able to continue.
The lead was eventually doubled, not against the run of play, on 69 minutes when Douglas bagged his second of the night. A looping header from a Dave Symington free-kick which flew over everyone but the defender.
The was a debut for Adam Knight who came on with twenty minutes to play and the midfielder looked lively.
Norris created a chance for himself shortly after Knight's introduction when he twisted and controlled the ball in the area, but the shot went agonisingly wide.
There was almost a lifeline on 85 minutes as a Byrne free kick was punched by Workington keeper Aaran Taylor onto his own post and back into his own hands.
A final effort, by Paul Clayton, was denied by Taylor with a save from the targetman’s header, but it was too little, too late.
