Shaw Lane 3, Sutton Coldfield Town 1

Shaw Lane matches the reverse fixture as they get their play-off hopes back on track.

Thursday night saw Shaw Lane return to winning ways as they beat bottom club Sutton Coldfield on home soil.

Chris Willcock tinkered with the formation and placed Ryan Serrant at right back and moved Kieran Lugsden into a more natural midfield position.

The tactics worked instantly. From kick-off the Ducks were on the attack and an Alex Byrne free-kick near the corner flag lead to a scramble in the box.

Jake Skelton had a shot blocked and Godwin Abadaki’s follow up was deflected over by the visitor’s keeper Matt Coton.

The opening goal came after four minutes. A lucky bounce from a Kieran Lugsden through ball found Damian Reeves unmarked in the area.

The deadly marksman wasn’t going to miss from eight yards and he slotted the ball into the net under Coton.

Another shot by Abadaki went narrowly wide across goal on nine minutes and a further free-kick by Byrne saw David Norris volley across goal from the opposite angle.

On 27 minutes Spencer Harris was brought down on the edge of the D and was in perfect Byrne range. The right winger made no mistake and the powerful free-kick beat Coton and flew into the net for 2-0.

Norris then made it five for the season for him with a spectacular volley on 36 minutes. Ben Gordon’s efforts down the left confused his marker and the cross found Norris who hit his shot from the edge of the area.

The torrential rain kept coming, but thankfully it didn’t dull the action on the pitch. Sutton Coldfield came out in the second half with nothing to lose, but their best chances were high and wide.

A scramble deep into added time did reward the visitors with a goal. Dominic Dell squeezed the ball past Ed Wilczynski at the near post to deny the keeper a deserved clean sheet.

Shaw Lane could have added to the three goals before the consolation with efforts by Spencer Harris and an almost shot by sub Tyler Williams where the ball, unfortunately, got stuck under his feet in the mud.
